Plant Enzyme Treatment Of Candida

Plant enzyme treatment of Candida by Dr. Jenefer Huntoon, Naturopathic Physician, Seattle, WA www.DrHuntoon.com

Candida is a yeast-fungus organism that causes a wide range of physical and mental symptoms. These symptoms include anxiety, depression, confusion, memory loss, fatigue, arthritis, allergies, blood sugar imbalances, craving for sweets and PMS. It is normal for the body to have small amounts of Candida in the intestinal tract. Candida is kept in check by the white blood cells which are abundant in a healthy immune system. When the immune system is weakened or the person eats too much sugar, the body can no longer keep Candida under control. When Candida takes over, many unpleasant symptoms occur.

The causes of Candida overgrowth are antibiotics, oral contraceptives, steroids and excess use of sugar and alcohol. In order to overcome Candida, the patient must get off sugar, fruit juice, dried fruit, honey, brown sugar, etc. It helps to limit whole fruit to two pieces a day or eliminate it entirely until the Candida is under control. A low glycemic natural foods diet works well for Candida.

In the medical world antifungal drugs are commonly used to kill yeast. This treatment tends to control the yeast while the drug is administered, but it usually will not prevent recurrence of the Candida. Also, many people experience an unpleasant die-off or herx reaction from antifungal drugs which includes but is not limited to fatigue, nausea, bloating, headaches, and skin problems. This is due to the inability of the immune system to handle the toxins produced by a large number of dead Candida organisms. Our Candida treatment involves using botanicals to strengthen the immune system so the body can control the yeast and improve the diet. We also use protease, the protein digesting enzyme, to digest the yeast.

When high potency protease is taken away from meals it breaks down foreign protein in the blood. Since Candida is a protein, the therapeutic protease digests it. With enzymes there is no die-off reaction because the enzymes digest the toxins resulting from the dead Candida organisms. Protease also strengthens the immune system. Patients usually report both physical and emotional improvement from enzyme treatment.
